Planning with Purpose: Understanding the Impact of Student Loans in 2026
In an essay, please respond to the following prompt:
In 2026, how do student loans influence major life decisions such as career choice, homeownership, or starting a family? Discuss both the challenges and opportunities student debt creates, and how individuals can make informed financial decisions despite these pressures.
Essays should be 1,000–1,500 words and demonstrate originality, thoughtful analysis, and clear understanding of long-term financial impact.
Eligibility Requirements
Neighborhood Credit Union will be awarding FIVE $2,000 scholarships for current high school seniors and college freshmen. To be eligible, you must meet all of the following:
- Have an account at Neighborhood Credit Union or be related to a member of the credit union.
- Must be a high school senior or a first-time college/vocational freshman (in good standing) with at least a 2.5 GPA.
- Must be planning to attend/attending a two-year or four-year accredited university/college or a vocational/technical school.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
Entry Requirements
You must complete one (1) of the following to be considered. Please double-check to make sure you've attached your essay or YouTube link before submitting:
- Essay: Word count must be between 1,000 and 1,500 words, OR
- Video: Record a video between 30 seconds and 2 minutes in length. Be sure to upload to YouTube and include link with your entry email.
Important Dates
- Accepting submissions from February 10 - May 15, 2026
- Winners notified via email June 15, 2026
- Winners publicly announced June 22, 2026
