International Credit Union Day 2026

About ICU Day
International Credit Union Day (ICU Day) has been celebrated on the third Thursday of October since 1948, recognizing the positive impact credit unions have on the lives of their members and communities. This annual celebration highlights the credit union philosophy of people helping people and raises awareness of the meaningful difference credit unions make every day. Join us at your local branch on Thursday, October 15, for treats, giveaways, and special festivities as we celebrate the cooperative spirit that brings us all together
2025 Theme
The 2026 International Credit Union Day theme, "Cooperative Finance: A Steady Signal in a Noisy World," highlights the unique role credit unions play in helping people navigate an increasingly complex financial landscape. In a world filled with economic uncertainty, constant change, and competing financial messages, credit unions remain a trusted source of guidance, stability, and support for their members.
Built on the cooperative principle of people helping people, credit unions focus on the long-term financial well-being of their members rather than shareholder profits. This member-first approach allows credit unions to provide steady, dependable financial services while staying connected to the needs of the communities they serve.
This year's theme also celebrates the strength of the global credit union movement. Across the world, credit unions empower individuals and families through affordable financial services, financial education, and personalized support. By working together and putting members at the center of every decision, credit unions continue to be a reliable signal of trust, opportunity, and financial resilience.
As we celebrate the 78th anniversary of International Credit Union Day on October 15, 2026, we recognize the positive impact credit unions make every day and reaffirm our commitment to helping members achieve their financial goals with confidence, no matter how noisy the world around them may be.
What makes credit unions unique?
Credit unions bring trustworthy and affordable financial services to areas not typically served by more traditional financial institutions or commercial banks. Expanding services to underserved areas gives members an opportunity to improve their lives.
- Equal Ownership—Credit unions are democratically controlled, member-owned, and member-operated. Each member has equal ownership and one vote regardless of how much money he or she has in savings.
- Not-for-Profit – Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives that provide a safe, convenient place for members to save money and access loans and other financial services at reasonable rates.
- Social Purpose: People Helping People – Credit unions exist to serve their members, not to make a profit. Every member counts, including those of modest means. This “people-first” philosophy compels credit unions and their employees to get involved in their community and support worthwhile causes.
- Volunteer Leadership – Each credit union is governed by a volunteer board of directors elected by and from the credit union’s membership.
- Financial Education for Members – Credit unions place particular importance on educational opportunities for their members and the public to help everyone become better-educated consumers of financial services.
- Trust – Lately credit unions have received positive press for being trustworthy and resilient institutions during a tumultuous time. Credit union members worldwide can be proud of these accomplishments and rest assured that their money is safe at the credit union.
