Every year, Americans come together to commemorate National Hispanic Heritage Month, a month-long celebration that runs from September 15th to October 15th. During this time, we honor the rich histories, diverse cultures, and impactful contributions of American citizens whose roots trace back to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
The origins of this observance can be traced back to 1968 when it was initially established as Hispanic Heritage Week under the administration of President Lyndon Johnson. Subsequently, in 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded it to encompass a 30-day period, spanning from September 15th to October 15th. This expansion was officially codified into law on August 17, 1988, through the approval of Public Law 100-402.
The significance of September 15th as the starting date is profound, as it marks the independence anniversaries of several Latin American nations, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Furthermore, Mexico and Chile celebrate their respective independence days on September 16th and September 18th, while Columbus Day, also known as Día de la Raza, falls within this 30-day period on October 12th.
