Enjoy the Best Southwest Juneteenth Celebration
Published June 10, 2019
Do you have plans for this weekend? If not, come join us on June 15th for the Juneteenth Celebration put on by the City of Cedar Hill and Best of Southwest. This free art and music festival is a gathering to honor the celebration of the ending of slavery.
A little history about this day: Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the ending of slavery dating back to 1865. On June 19th, Union soldiers led by Major General Gordon Granger arrived at Galveston, Texas with the news that the Civil War had ended and that all slaves were now free. This was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation had become official on January 1, 1863. In the following years, Juneteenth celebrated with music, skits, barbecuing, picnics and ethnic dress.
This year’s celebration will have food vendors, a variety of art by local artists, crafts, musical performances and much more.
We hope to see you there!
