Hear text read aloud with Narrator (Windows) or VoiceOver (Mac)

Microsoft Windows 7

Narrator is the built-in screen reader that reads text on your screen aloud and describes events, such as notifications or calendar appointments.

  • To start Narrator: choose Start > All Programs > Accessories > Ease of Access > Narrator.
  • To stop Narrator from reading text, press the Control key on the keyboard.
  • To read the currently selected window, press Control + Shift + Space Bar.
  • To exit Narrator, click the Exit button on the Narrator window. Narrator will stop reading the information on the screen.

Microsoft Windows 10

  • To start or stop Narrator: press CTRL + Windows Logo Key + Enter.
  • On Windows Mobile devices: press Windows Logo Key + Volume UP key to toggle Narrator on/off.
  • Additionally, you can press Ctrl + Windows Logo Key + N to open Narrator settings.

Mac OS High Sierra VoiceOver

VoiceOver is the built-in screen reader that describes aloud what appears on your screen and speaks the text in documents, webpages, and windows. Using VoiceOver, you control your Mac with the keyboard or trackpad gestures. You can also connect a refreshable braille display to use with VoiceOver.

  • To turn VoiceOver on or off: press Command-F5.
  • To customize VoiceOver using VoiceOver Utility: press Control-Option-F8 (when VoiceOver is on).
  • To learn how to use VoiceOver: choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Accessibility, click VoiceOver, then click Open VoiceOver Training.

Use Magnifier or Zoom to see items on the screen

Magnifier (Windows) and Zoom (Mac) are tools that enlarges your screen so you can see words and images better. You can magnify the entire screen, or just a part of it, and move the magnifier where you want it on your desktop.

Microsoft Windows 7, 8.1, 10

  • To turn on Magnifier and Zoom in, press Windows Logo Key + Plus (+).
  • Or you can open Magnifier by choosing Start > All Programs > Accessories > Ease of Access > Magnifier.
  • To Zoom out, press Windows Logo Key + Minus (-).
  • To exit Magnifier, press Windows Logo Key + Esc.
  • Windows 10: you can press Ctrl + Windows Logo Key + M to open Magnifier settings.

Mac OS High Sierra

    To set zoom options, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Accessibility, then click Zoom.
